Skyscraper Stan and The Commission Flats
Every Friday in November @ The Lulie Tavern,Abbotsford
Stan Woodhouse, AKA Skyscraper Stan, fronts The Commission Flats. I believe they are still called that, and if they have changed their name, well that would be a mistake.
My initial encounter with this lanky Kiwi and his band was during a set at The Willie Stage at Dashville Skyline in 2016. We were all raising some dust as we danced along with this new discovery for many of us.
Oskar Herbig still fills the room with his lively guitar. Martin Schilov has been on bass for quite some time, too. There was a drummer in the engine room and the saxophone was well blown by someone else too! As I missed their names, I apologize, but well done all around.
Stan’s music is hard to pigeonhole.  I think he once called it troubadour rock and roll. I was sitting over a pint and a shot trying to put the music into a box. Fortunately, I was unable to do so.
We got some rock and roll, some solo tunes by Stan, and then some more of that rock and soul and roll stuff. Although his music may not be that like him a Graham Parker mood sort of hit me at one point. Maybe it was the tequila or the edible chocolate that brought that thought on.
That got blown away by the next song which had nothing to do with a Parker sound.
You know what is good to know?
If you want to find out what type of music Stan produces you have the opportunity over the next 3 Friday nights in November.
Come on down to the Lulie Tavern in Abbotsford and knock back a few beers, shoot some pool and have a dance with The Commission Flats and their kiwi born and now Melbourne-based Leader Stan, The Man.
It’s free so there is a money-back guarantee. If you don’t like what you hear, come find me at the bar or dancing and I will give you back your admission price and a piece of my mind!  Or if you feel like it, come over and discuss politics or love or what type of music you think this band plays. No judgment on anything, well, maybe your politics.
