There is much to say about a musical event in the dirty, dusty, clay of Mississippi in the heat of the summer. We were sweating, dancing, eating watermelon, and basking in the riff that was made famous by RL Burnside and others who came from this soil.
Even though you bought a ticket to attend, a simple 25 dollars each day, it felt like you were at a reunion. This was not a musical event where international acts are slipped into the lineup to boost the numbers.
This felt like a family gathering together for some downhome fun and relishing in the music of this sacred land.
The Picnic is a chance to pay homage to Mississippi Fred Mcdowell, the Burnsides The Kimbrough’s, and more. Getting down in the dust and getting into a trance with this polyrhythmic sound was what everyone came for.

It is my favorite groove, my musical mantra, my internal click track.
Mikey, Bobby, Nello, and I had a fabulous stay at the Foxfire Ranch and our hosts from Bill to Annette to Annie along with anyone else working there made us feel like we were right at home.
Goin’ Down South baby.
Musical highlights were just about everyone I saw on the bill. There was never a dull moment and between acts, the locals and festival goers all brought smiles and joy to the steamy days.
Time for that watermelon eating contest, or free cookies from Sugaree’s bakery, or going under the mist to cool down, or just sharing stories.
The question that came up with everyone I spoke to: “So you came all the way from Australia just for this?”
