Since the release of Greene’s debut album, Gone Wanderin’ (2002), this singer-songwriter has been on my radar. His turns of phrase, his excellent playing of guitar and keyboards, and a bucketful of fabulous tunes have made him one to keep an eye on.
Besides his solo work, he has been a gun for hire for Phil Lesh, joined in many times with Govt Mule, was a member of The Black Crowes and also had a short stint in a band called Trigger Hippy with Joan Osborne and others. As you can see, he wanders around the jam band universe and is well respected within. He has always reminded me a bit of Jonathan Edwards. Check out “Judgement Day” and see if you agree.
Lilly Winwood opened for Jackie tonight and she has a beautiful voice that accompanied her simple guitar playing. You listen to her voice and although there is no musical link to her father to be found there, Steve Winwood, is definitely her dad. With her new release Talking Walls the production and songs displayed there are firmly planted in Nashville, and it is worth a listen.
Tonight, with just a guitar she gave us a charming set and did a gorgeous cover of what she said was her favourite song even if it has been covered by many. Angel From Montgomery written by John Prine was the number and she handled it well. She has some pipes, and she has some music in her blood.
Jackie Green was joined by the guitarist from his band, Nathan dale, and the duo delivered 17 songs that covered most of the well-known numbers from his catalogue. “I Don’t Live In A Dream”, “I’m So Gone”, and 4 others were dished out to the audience. Jackie is known for doing covers from some of his favourite songwriters and tonight was no different. Before he launched into them, he asked the audience who had been there the night before and only a few hands were raised. He said, “So I guess I can just play the same set as last night!” But of course, he did not.
We were served “I Shall Be Released” and “Not Dark Yet” both of which were written by Bob Dylan. Jackie always does a Grateful Dead song and tonight was a beautiful rendition of “So Many Roads” written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia. This is a song about Garcia and is held dear by Deadheads around the world and the audience appreciated it and maybe a few teary eyes came to the front.
Jackie was enjoying himself and he played a few more of his songs before jumping into the Jerry Jeff Walker singalong “Mr Bojangles.”
Ending with “Tupelo” Jackie and Nathan lifted the spirits of all in attendance and we headed out into the steamy night happy about this charming little performance.
If you want to get a glimpse of what I heard during this evening check out Live From The Throckmorton Theatre which Greene released in 2019. We may not get him to Australia, but you can invite him into your home and hear what he is up to these days.
