Holy Letter “H” Batman!
Hot “Fucking” Tuna as we called them rates up there as a band I saw many times back in my Long Island Days. Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady’s side project from the Jefferson Airplane has been ongoing for 54 years now.
This gig at the Commack Arena went for 29 songs that included 2 encores. It was close to 6 hours long. You are talking loud rocking blues from a trio that probably helped my hearing loss along. What? Huh?
Hot Tuna is retiring as an electric unit this year and I would love to catch one more gig.
When I was in college I knew a dude who was running a spotlight at a Tuna concert. During the show the road manager or crew came up to where he was working and held out a baggie with some white powder. “Here, you might want to do a bunch of this as they are going to play for some time.”
They started as an acoustic duo and they will go out that way. Jack is 79 and Jorma is 82.
The Hippos are probably the band I saw the most on this list. Australian Blues unit that would do 3 sets a night at The Crows Nest Hotel back in the late 80’s. I lived a block away and would always say I would go for a set but would be there at closing time. Some very memorable hangovers during that residency.
Steve Marriot and Humble Pie were amazing. Saw them once only after Peter Frampton left the band and they blew the roof off Madison Square Garden. It was May 29, 1973. Just about 50 years ago and I was 15 at the time. Tickets were 6.50.
And Hound Dog Taylor I was lucky enough to catch before he died at the age of 60 in 1975.
Enjoy the music and go out and support live music whenever you can.
I could have been a rich man if I went to fewer concerts, but I don’t think I would be as happy.
