G. Love And Special Sauce
Special Guest Apricot Ink
26 November 2023
G.Love and Special Sauce are a moment for you to get loose, smile, boogie and for some, just simply stare at the artist.
More on the staring in a bit.
Tonight, Canberra duo Apricot Ink, was an excellent addition to a night at The Corner. The beats with a bit of skank the duo of Tom and Sara caught the attention of the punters who arrived a little early. Dub, hip hop, pop a sweet little appetizer.
The main course was Love and The Sauce. My soul brother from the homeland of East Coast USA came out dressed in a hat, suit and sneakers and cold beverages were on hand for us to slip into his world. Slipping we did, some dude kept spilling his beer near the stage front, but he may have been overserved with some edibles. We gave him space and we danced around the puddles.
No one was injured in the time we spent with this band that has been together for almost 30 years. Well, Jimi Jazz Prescott on bass has been here for the long haul and Chuck Treece now handles the sticks. Jeff “Houseman” Clemens filled that seat for over 20 years but Treece was in the groove. His smile and playing were ace.
Jimi Jazz and his bass are one being when they play. True artistry and a vital part of this evening of music. As the old joke goes, don’t let the drumming stop, because when that does the bass solo commences. Tonight we had one of those bass players you could just groove to for a while. All night long.
Garrett Dutton likes the things I do and they are hanging, family, beer, happy grooves, and a bit of 420. Having seen him in 1997 at Byron and followed him from his first record I feel like I am visiting with a mate when I gyrate to this trio.
In 2008 I saw G Love and Special Sauce on a bill with the John Butler Trio and Phil Lesh and Friends outdoors at Fort Mason down near the waterfront in California. It was Labour Day Weekend, the sunshine was all over us and inside of us as we danced, frisbeed, and had a San Franciso Moment that could not be beat.
Last night G and his Sauce gave us a whole bunch of stuff from his debut record. There was no disappointment in the room over the choice of songs because the songs were secondary to the mood.
G Love kept me entertained and smiling during Covid with his online antics and I tip my fedora to him for sharing his music and I hope you all gave him a tip if you did wander into his streaming juice.
So back to The Corner….and the staring. There was this dude who stood in front of G the entire night. Staring.
It was a bit unnerving and I commend Mr. Love for just doing what he does.
Have a look:
This went on for the entire set.
"I'm more inspired right now than I've ever been before," G. Love reflects. "I feel more thoughtful, seasoned, marinated, confident. I'm making the records I've always wanted to make."
Improving the world one groove at a time.
