January 2024 has passed and most of my readers may be waiting for a playlist of new songs and records for January of this month.
Some of you probably won’t notice.
Sadly, there will no longer be a monthly playlist.
There still will be playlists at times.
As I mentioned, I have other writings I would like to concentrate upon and music meanderings will continue in some ways with reviews and the like.
Collating the monthly playlist and the constant search for new music was becoming a chore. When creativity becomes a job, it is time to switch lanes.
New music should be enjoyed over and over again. Listening to an album once or thrice is just not enough to capture the depth or enjoyment of the art. Each month I will let you in on several new releases, but I am going back into the archives to listen to classics, live recordings, and a bunch of blues that I miss hearing.
Music should be all about pleasure. I am making sure I continue that first and foremost.
Here are 2 new releases that I have been enjoying this month.
Beginnings: Collected Pedal Steel Works- Gary Peters- This is the debut album by pedal steel improviser Peters. It’s a delight as background and it’s a joy with a set of headphones. I know you all know I love the pedal steel and there is so much out there these days.
Spencer Cullum, Daniel Lanois, and Barry Walker Jr are just some of the people releasing music that uses the steel outside of a honky tonk.
Box Truck Boogie-Tommy and the Oh’s-Mariposa Gold was released in 2022 and that was a wonderful trip through cosmic country and one of my favourite records of that year. Tommy Oliverio and his band veer back from outer space and this record careens from the highway to the ditch and back again. At this early juncture, my record of 2024 so far, but you know where my tastes lie. Clocking in at 27:55, it is a appetiser of the highest order.
