Discovered In November 2022 Mixed Tape
Released in 2022 Found By Me This Month-Move Bottom For Playlist-Enjoy
2022 is quickly coming to an end and I sit and wonder how many fabulous records I have missed.
The Year’s Best Lists will soon be out, I will discover even more new music I am sure.
Meanwhile, here is the best of November 2022 that I have found. As usual, I discovered it this month, but the music was released sometime this calendar year.
First off, the album of the month
**Jeb Loy Nichols-The United States Of The Broken Hearted**-I have been captured by Jeb since I discovered him a few years ago. This is a beautiful and moving record and a reflection on America, the world we live in, and to remind us that money can’t buy you happiness.
Jeb says, “I thought that the people I was living among in London, the cultural dominant in London just could not tolerate small beauty. And that is what I was after, small beauty”.
Billy Strings- Me And Dad-A bucket list item for Billy. For posterity and the love of this music and most importantly the love he has for his Dad. As to be expected, great picking happening here.
Gurf Morlix-Caveman-Looking like a caveman these days, Gurf, has probably released the best record of his long and varied career. He has worn many hats and here at the young age of 71, he has settled into a groove. This album reminds me of Ray Wylie Hubbard and that is a good thing.
“I love ‘Wooly Bully’ and ‘Hanky Panky’ and those kinds of songs,” says the man who contributes “Hodgepodge” to the genre on his new album. “My goal was to make a lamebrain rock & roll album. I think it probably ended up somewhere in between what I normally do and that goal.”
Hermanos Gutierrez-El Bueno Y El Malo-Beautiful interplay of guitar from these Swiss/Ecuadorian Brothers massaged together this time by producer Dan Auerbach.
Instrumental music that just takes you away.
“It’s very close to nature, somehow. There’s something beautifully natural about it,” Auerbach says. “Some music sounds like tall, jagged buildings. This sounds like wide-open spaces in the outdoors.”
Garret T Capps- People Are Beautiful-Continuing with his flight of cosmic country, Capps has the twang and the hat all down and here he adds some more space. Nasa Country is the name of his band, so don’t forget the special cacti.
Other albums of mention:
Miko Marks And The Resurrectors-Feel Like Going Home-A black woman in the country music industry. Soulful and grimy Americana.
Bill Callahan-YTI⅃AƎЯ -Bill comes knocking at your door, lightly, asking to come in and talk about his observations and ponderings on life.
“It felt like it was necessary to rouse people…I wanted sounds and words that made you feel, and that lifted you up.”
The Williams Brothers-Memories To Burn-Country harmonies were recorded 20 odd years ago, finally out of the can and on a device or record store near you. Think Everly Brothers.
Joan Shelly-The Spur-Beautiful words and a voice that will make your ears listen. Don’t take my word for it, have a listen.
The White Buffalo-Year Of The Dark Horse-Jake Smith is his name but he is The White Buffalo. Songs that make you think about love and life and take you deeper.
Sam Bush-Radio John: Songs Of John Hartford-Hartford was a true song and dance man and I know deep within that I am oversimplifying the impact he had on county and bluegrass. Hartford also wrote “Gentle On My Mind”, a song made famous by Glenn Campbell. Sam Bush plays just about everything on this record except for one rave-up on the last track. John is a legend. Sam is a treasure.
First Aid Kit-Palomino-Swedish musicians Klara and Johanna Söderberg deliver from deep in the heart of Sweden. I think it is their best record to date.
Discover with your ears but learn with your heart.
