Discovered In January 2023 Mixed Tape
Mostly Released in 2023....Discovered this month at the least
January snuck around the corner and slipped into the gutter like a rat with a slice of pizza.
It’s over, it’s done, except for maybe a bit of crust.
How was your January?
Was it crunchy or was it smooth?
Or was it more like a fluffernutter?
And here is the music that has come into my ears this month.
Tissue anyone?
As is the case with previous January playlists, some songs were released in late 2022.
I hope you can deal with that.
This is the best of this month that I have come across.
If you find anything I should check out, leave me some comments!
Jake Swamp and The Pine-Simpson And Banks-Drew Zieff is the leader of the band and songwriter.
“At the end of a long day traversing the White Mountains, when the sun has laid down behind the horizon and the shush of the forest descends, there’s a certain feeling that builds around the campfire”. This is Drew’s take on the record. Check it out.
Myron Elkins-Factrories, Farms and Amphetamines-Some good songs, but it is all about the voice. Slip into it and realize that the voice is coming out of the pie hole of a 21-year-old kid. If you were surprised when you heard Colter Wall at a similar age, you know what I am talking about.
Charlie Daniels Band-Volunteer Jam 1-The Legend Begins-The Volunteer Jam was a bunch of good old boys who got together for a star-studded series of concerts in Tennesee back in the day. This was the first gig and it deserves a rating of 4 cowboy hats out of 5!
“If you don’t like the way I’m living, you just leave this long-haired country boy alone.”
Hammock-Love In The Void-A Nashville duo with no cowboy hats!
Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson are Hammock and this is their 12th album. Yes, I have never heard of them before.
Discussing the concept behind it, Byrd offered: "Life can sometimes feel like an empty void but then there are those moments when everything seems shot through with ineffable beauty... the kind that takes your breath away or leaves a lump in your throat. Instead of seeing the void as negative, maybe the void can become the entry point for love. Maybe if we all could acknowledge our own inner void, we could learn to be more vulnerable with each other. To do a better job at loving each other, and making love a verb. When we choose to love in the void, we choose each other."
Bob Dylan-Fragments-Time Out Of Mond Sessions-The Bootleg Series Volume 17-Simply, if you loved this sort of comeback album by the Poet Laureate/Nobel Prize-winning Dylan, you will love the remixed version of the record.
Sorry, Daniel Lanois, I prefer this mix.
Strap yourself in for 6 hours of Dylan, some in the studio and some live recordings.
And of course, if you cannot stand Bob, well, what is wrong with ya?
Johnny Nicholas Presents Moon and the Stars-Tribute to Moon Mullican Volume 1-Moon left the planet in 1967 but his music and energy continue to inspire.
Here is Johnny to tell you all about it! Simply, this music is right in my wheelhouse! I have been listening to versions of “7 Nights To Rock”, “Cherokee Boogie” and “I’ll Sail My Ship Alone” for close to 50 years. But you may not know a thing about him….it is time to educate yourself!
