January brings on some new releases that are worth wrapping your ears around while you recycle the wrapping paper from December.
Have you recycled the Christmas Tree yet? Or do you pack it up in a box?
How are you coping with the 3rd year of the pandemic?
I miss you all.
(Note-My assessment of this Spotify Storm and what streaming service to use going forward will be decided in a month. Let’s see which way the wind blows….)
Album Of The Month
Set Sail-North Mississippi Allstars (ATO)
The North Mississippi Allstars are my favourite band from Hernando, Mississippi. For over a couple of decades they have dished out Hill Country Blues, jam band beauty, roots, rock, soul, and made it into one stew of World Boogie.
Luther and Cody Dickinson planted these seeds and what a garden it has become.
Luther once told me with a big grin that he is a ‘guitar-ho”. As Luther recently said, “Music is like food and variety is important”. Re-phrased, but all the same.
Up And Rolling released in 2019 was a prelude to this record in some ways. Although RL Burnside is always present within their records, Set Sail is much more mellow and smooth and funky with a groove wrapped in some organic nature from another time. Old and new as always.
On these grooves we have the formidable presence of William Bell, the Stax Legend, singing “Never Wanna be Kissed”. At 82, he can still bring it.
Lamar Williams Jr joins the band with his honey flecked vocals and Jesse Williams now takes up the bass duties within the group. John Medeski steps up on keyboards for a couple of tracks and even Luther’s daughters join Sharisse Norman on vocals.
It’s a family affair. It always has been and always will be.
Roll up the rug, get on the couch, do what you do, this is one to enjoy over and over, with your homegirl or boy.
It’s January but it hits my Best Of List for 2022.
Here are a couple of others that you should dive into.
Dope Lemon -Rose Pink Cadillac
Need some tunes to cruise to the covid blanketed beaches this summer? Having a chilled gathering at home with your lockdown virus impacted friends ala isolation? This laid back groove of a record will fill your home and heart with some mellow yellow
Angus Stone said of the record, “I'd like to say this is my love album. For the times we were in, the struggles that people are going through at the moment, I think it's a better time than any to share love and this record is a thing of love."
All you need is love…or a Cadillac.
Jamestown Revival-Young Man (Thirty Tigers Records)
The folk duo from Magnolia, Texas is made up of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance. Put this into your Americana basket and listen to the entire record. Produced by Robert Ellis and Josh Block, the album has not one electric guitar. Simply, it is charming and warm.
