Winter is ending here in Australia. You can feel the energy coming off the trees as they commence to bud.
August has provided some fine listening pleasure.
Artists like the jam rocker Katie Skene, Watty Thompson the bush storyteller, and Olive King are among some of the new artists I have stumbled across this month.
So, let’s get it on.
Album Of The Month Mother Road-Grace Potter
Potter hails from Vermont and when she first came into sight with her band The Nocturnals I was taken by her vocals. The Nocturnals are no longer but Potter is still creating and this is her best album to date.
She has a a collection of Flying V guitars (12 at last count) and this album is confident, fun and you can dance to it if you so desire.
Greetings from Planet Love (as The Fraternal Order of the All)-Andrew Gold
This album was originally released in 1997 as a tribute to the psychedelic rockers that Gold loved. You can hear The Beatles, The Byrds, The Beach Boys and The Doors within these tracks. The Fraternal Order of The All is simply Andrew Gold and Graham Gouldman (10cc) imagining this gem that could have been recorded in 1968.
Watty Thompson-Watty Thompson-Hailing from somewhere in Southern Victoria, Watty brings us some down-home Australian folk-tinged music. This is one record worth checking out and I look forward to seeing him live in October at the Out On The Weekend Festival.
A unique talent that is well worth finding out about.
Cool Dead-Justin And The Cosmics- Some interesting punks from Nashville. This is NOT country or western.
Mississippi-Jason Eady- Mississippian by birth but now based in Texas, Eady combines the sound of Texas country with some slick grooves that remind me of Dwight Yoakam and JJ Cale. Take your shoes off and stick a piece of grass in your mouth and enjoy Eady’s sunshine.
Prequel-Infinite River-Gretchen Gonzales (Slumber Party), Joey Mazzola (Sponge, Detroit Cobras), and Warren Defever (His Name is Alive) — came together as “a little bubble” during the pandemic at Gonzales’ home.
Atmospheric and moody music you could possibly find playing at some groovy masseuse’s place.
Realms-Cindy Wilson-Wih the B-52’s winding down, Cindy has now released her second solo album in 6 years.
“There’s a lot of different moods on the album. It sounds modern to me, but also, it has elements of the past, too,” Wilson says. This diversity led her to title the album Realms “because it’s like each song is like a room you go through.”
This record is growing on me like moss. This is POP music for sure, enjoy it.
Rose of Aces-Cordobas - Do you like Country Rock? If so, this album is for you. Roses, aces, the deal is going down and you can file this close to the Dead’s American Beauty if you gather your LPs by genre or influences.
The Cordobas sing the praise of life and the joy and power of music. Hook up your speakers and tune into some positivity.
Tears You Hide-Jeremie Albino-With his second album here, Albino really stretches out with some rockers, some soul, and some whattayacallit Americana.
This was very close to being the Album Of The Month until Grace Potter just pipped him at the post.
Whatever, this is art, it is not commerce or a contest.
