16 June 2018

Note: I have been a bit tied up this week eating like a refugee raising money for Syrian Refugee relief, so this review is a tad tardy. If you do want to donate see link at the bottom!
My ears perked up when Fran Liddle, a bloody good Sydney singer said to me, “We all want to be like Alice Terry”. I asked her some more and she bubbled over with joy speaking of her and mentioned her Album Launch was on the next night. With that recommendation, I never doubted I was going to this show.
Of course the gig was sold out, but there is always a ticket. Thanks to Tim who ended up having to sell his ticket so he could work the merchandise table, my spot on the dancefloor was sealed. Having never heard of Alice and not knowing who was on in support, I had no preconceived idea of what I was getting into. Alas, when I walked into the urban grass of The Green Mohair Suits playing I knew it was destined to be an enjoyable evening.
The Green Mohair Suits provided an energetic kick off as the crowd filled Leadbelly in anticipation of Alice Terry. With people drinking at tables, some sitting on the floor (as there was a dance floor tonight) and some bopping along they were given a very good hand and a deserved encore. Their picking and singing has always brought a smile to my face and with songs about drinking and love gone wrong, all was right with the world.
Alice Terry came out to a very generous greeting and once she opened her mouth I could tell why. For me there are people who can sing and people who have pipes as they say; Terry is of the latter. She sang with an acoustic guitar , sang with some of the Mohair’s, and then brought out her funky soul band with a 3 piece horn section and 2 female backing singers to shake the place up.
At 27 and from Moruya down in Southern NSW, I had never heard her sing or heard the name. With a voice and a presence on stage like she has, I am quite amazed she slipped under my radar. From 4 songs in I became an Alice Terry fan. She had us dancing, thinking, and most of all smiling like idiots throughout her set.
I don’t want to tell you too much. I just want you to go out and buy her debut release and enjoy it. But the clip above gives you some idea of this young ladys’s talent.
The Fear Of is out now. Go sink yourself into these 10 tracks and you will not be disappointed. Then go see her live.
