Re-reading this book from 1989, 37 years later, and my mantra of ‘nothing much has changed’ certainly does echo through my head. If you have not read John Irving’s book, and you have an interest in American history, this book should be put on your list for 2026. Although not a history book, it is a novel; you can draw the lines to where we are today.
Irving has captured the scars of Vietnam, the illegality, immorality, and lies of the Reagan Administration, and more, within this small-town tale of a small-town boy from a granite quarry. The relationships between the characters and the love and the loss they experience are juxtaposed with the insanity of the “American War”.
What do Americans know about morality? They don’t want their presidents to have penises but they don’t mind if their presidents covertly arrange to support the Nicaraguan rebel forces after Congress has restricted such aid; they don’t want their presidents to deceive their wives but they don’t mind if their presidents deceive Congress – lie to the people and violate the people’s constitution!-Prayer For Owen Meany

Look at what we are living through today. America’s war on drugs today was the supposed reason we toppled the regime in Venezuela, we obliterated Iran’s nuclear capabilities, and now we want to assist in the overthrow of their regime, and we continue to support the genocide in Gaza. The only thing we are missing today is KNOWN boots on the ground. I am 100% certain that we have CIA operatives on the ground in many places, taking part in activities we will find out about later.

Reagan was not killing citizens on the street. He had not sunk that low. How much further can America sink? (Note: Ronnie was slow responding to the AIDS Epidemic….so he does have some American blood on his hands)

My heart and soul hope that this might be the case. Living 10,000 miles away, I keep my finger on the pulse from afar, and it is not distance that makes me observe how weak it is. The heartbeat of democracy is failing.
