I Still Cry

9/11 2001-2021

20 Years ago, I awoke to a phone call urgently advising me to turn on the TV.

Someone on the phone said, “Andrew Denton is on the radio talking about planes flying into the World Trade Centre and I am not sure if it is a joke or not.”

 The TV confirmed the reality.

Was Rick OK? My brother in law recruited people to work at Cantor Fitzgerald. Joel and Tony ran Farmer’s Markets in the shadow of the towers.

I can’t get through. I get some voice mails. Panic. Scared.

Finally, I get through to the offices of the Greenmarket and ask how everyone is and if Joel and Tony are safe? Everyone is safe and sound, I think they said they lost a truck or a van or something.

“What’s happening with the Towers now?”

The words I heard made no sense. I had them repeat them 2 more times and I still could not comprehend. I hung up.

He had said, “They are on the ground”.

Two decades have passed.

The Taliban are back in control of Afghanistan.

The City That Never Sleeps Re-Opened This Year.

Some sentences still take some time to digest.
