National Sorry Day commemorates the anniversary of the 1997 Bringing Them Home report. The landmark report detailed the harrowing experiences of the Stolen Generations and made recommendations on how those injustices could be rectified.

It’s been 29 years since the report was tabled, but analysis by the Healing Foundation suggests just five of its 83 recommendations have been clearly implemented.

“There have been decades of reports, research and inquiries, but too little action,” said Kungarakan man Steve Larkin, the chair of the foundation.

“With only one year until the 30-year anniversary of Bringing them home, there is no excuse left for inactivity.” (NITV)

GDP makes no additions to take into account the health of the population, the quality of education, the strength of social relationships, the intelligence of public debate or the integrity of public institutions, nor subtractions to account for social strife, inequality or environmental degradation. If a house burnt down, then a new house would need to be built. This would increase purchases of building materials and require labour to rebuild it, thereby increasing GDP. I have been watching this story closely, and now it appears that the Orange Grifter McTrump is coming for every dollar that he can steal from the American Public.

The Trump administration announced on Monday the creation of a $1.8 billion fund to compensate those who claim they were targeted by the Biden Justice Department and Democrats, forging a pipeline to funnel taxpayer money to President Trump’s allies.

The highly unusual “anti-weaponisation” fund — denounced by critics as a political slush fund — was unveiled just after Mr Trump withdrew his lawsuit demanding at least $10 billion against the Internal Revenue Service. It was an apparent effort to skirt oversight by the judge in the case who had expressed concern that the suit represented self-dealing between the president and a department run by his former defense lawyer, Todd Blanche.

The cash value of the fund was set at $1.776 billion, a nod to the nation’s founding. The Justice Department added in its announcement that its creation was intended “to provide a systematic process to hear and redress claims of others who suffered weaponization and lawfare,” though it offered few other details, including who might qualify.

In addition to withdrawing his suit against the I.R.S., Mr. Trump will also drop separate administrative claims. Those include his demand the government pay him $230 million for investigations into his 2016 campaign’s potential ties to Russia and into his handling of classified documents after he left office.

Mr. Trump, his two sons and his family business, who sued the I.R.S. together, would receive an apology but not be paid out of the new fund, officials said.

“This is one of the single most corrupt acts in American history,” said Donald K. Sherman, president of the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a nonprofit legal watchdog group that has been critical of the administration.

He completed the first stage of his walk for truth in May last year, when he trekked 486km from Portland in Victoria’s south-west, on Gunditjmara country, to the steps of state parliament in Melbourne.

Yesterday, the 19th of April, Lovett kicked off his 800KM walk from Victoria’s Parliament to the White Fellas’ Big House in Canberra. I was there to give my support with my feet and to acknowledge that the truth is all that matters in dealing with the past here in Australia.

The Yoorrook Justice Commission has already shown the country what truth‑telling looks like when it is done with honesty and rigour. Thousands of pages of evidence and findings now sit before governments. They are not abstract. They are not theoretical. They are the truth of how this country has treated its First Peoples and what must change if we are serious about justice. And the reality is this the targets designed to improve equity for First Peoples will never be met unless we confront why the gap exists in the first place. Truth at a state level is not enough. Australia needs a national truth‑telling process one that brings the whole country into this work, honours the truths already told and creates space for the truths still waiting to be heard.

And here is the critical point, the public is ready, Communities are ready. Families are ready. Young people are ready. The only hesitation left sits within the systems that have the most responsibility to act. Last year, more than 22,000 people walked for truth in Victoria. Elders, families, school groups, allies, people who had never been part of anything like this before. They came because they wanted to learn. They came because they wanted to stand with First Peoples. They came because they understood that truth matters. This year, the National Walk for Truth grows not just in one place, but everywhere, through coordinated walks across the continent that show a country stepping forward together.

Some people are unsure about national truth‑telling and that’s natural in a country that has avoided hard truths for so long. But truth‑telling isn’t about blame. It’s about honesty, evidence and understanding the systems we all live inside today. You don’t need to agree with every part of it to take a first step, you just need to be willing to listen. Listening is where truth‑telling begins and it’s how we build a fairer, safer, more honest country for everyone.

These walks are not about spectacle. They are about education, solidarity and commitment. They are about showing that truth‑telling is not the work of First Peoples alone. It is the work of a nation. And they are about breaking the pattern that has defined too much of our history, the belief that silence is neutral. Silence has never been neutral in this country. Silence has always protected the systems that harm First Peoples. Truth‑telling is how we break that pattern. It is how we build trust. It is how we build respect. It is how we build a future where First Peoples aren’t fighting the same battles generation after generation. And it is how non‑Indigenous Australians can finally understand the full story of the place we all call home.

At the centre of this national moment is a clear call to the Prime Minister that Australia must establish a national truth‑telling process. An open letter is gathering signatures from across the country, from community leaders, organisations, families and everyday Australians who believe that truth is the only honest path forward. Signing the letter is one of the most important actions people can take. It sends a message that cannot be ignored, the country is ready and the government must be too.

Fire commenced in MOGAS plant that produces automobile gasoline at the refinery.

Australia has two refineries and 120,000 barrels are refined here everyday.

10% of Australian fuel supplies come from this refinery and 50% of our fuel in Victoria comes from this refinery.

Fire has been contained to one section of the plant. Viva Energy says this will have no impact on supplies in Australia…. “at this stage”.

Substack and YouTube have their own algorithmic and time-wasting problems. AI slop, reels, shorts, all bash my eyes and ears for attention. Substack really upsets me because I joined as a writer their early on and it was a great place to READ. Now there are so many podcasts and short videos that at times it feels like journalistic Instagram.

And the world is moving at such a pace, I think all of us are questioning whether it is AI or reality. Is it an AI ghostwriter giving us fiction as reality, or is everything an opinion piece?

For example, I follow the Independent Press much more than I read the New York Times or watch MSNow. I hardly ever watch TV news at all.

Within this same framework, the United States has concentrated the largest number of its forces, bases, and military capabilities around Iran—a country that, at least since the founding of the United States, has never initiated a war. Recent American aggressions launched from these very bases have demonstrated how threatening such a military presence truly is. Naturally, no country confronted with such conditions would forgo strengthening its defensive capabilities. What Iran has done—and continues to do—is a measured response grounded in legitimate self-defense, and by no means an initiation of war or aggression.

Relations between Iran and the United States were not originally hostile, and early interactions between the Iranian and American people were not marred with hostility or tension. The turning point, however, was the 1953 coup d’état—an illegal American intervention aimed at preventing the nationalization of Iran’s own resources. That coup disrupted Iran’s democratic process, reinstated dictatorship, and sowed deep distrust among Iranians toward U.S. policies. This distrust deepened further with America’s support for the Shah’s regime, its backing of Saddam Hussein during the imposed war of the 1980s, the imposition of the longest and most comprehensive sanctions in modern history, and ultimately, unprovoked military aggression—twice, in the midst of negotiations—against Iran.

Yet all these pressures have failed to weaken Iran. On the contrary, the country has grown stronger in many areas: literacy rates have tripled—from roughly 30% before the Islamic Revolution to over 90% today; higher education has expanded dramatically; significant advances have been achieved in modern technology; healthcare services have improved; and infrastructure has developed at a pace and scale incomparable to the past. These are measurable, observable realities that stand independent of fabricated narratives.

At the same time, the destructive and inhumane impact of sanctions, war, and aggression on the lives of the resilient Iranian people must not be underestimated. The continuation of military aggression and recent bombings profoundly affect people’s lives, attitudes, and perspectives. This reflects a fundamental human truth: when war inflicts irreparable harm on lives, homes, cities, and futures, people will not remain indifferent toward those responsible.

This raises a fundamental question: Exactly which of the American people’s interests are truly being served by this war? Was there any objective threat from Iran to justify such behavior? Does the massacre of innocent children, the destruction of cancer-treatment pharmaceutical facilities, or boasting about bombing a country “back to the stone ages” serve any purpose other than further damaging the United States’ global standing?
Iran pursued negotiations, reached an agreement, and fulfilled all its commitments. The decision to withdraw from that agreement, escalate toward confrontation, and launch two acts of aggression in the midst of negotiations were destructive choices made by the U.S. government—choices that served the delusions of a foreign aggressor.

Attacking Iran’s vital infrastructure—including energy and industrial facilities—directly targets the Iranian people. Beyond constituting a war crime, such actions carry consequences that extend far beyond Iran’s borders. They generate instability, increase human and economic costs, and perpetuate cycles of tension, planting seeds of resentment that will endure for years. This is not a demonstration of strength; it is a sign of strategic bewilderment and an inability to achieve a sustainable solution.

Is it not also the case that America has entered this aggression as a proxy for Israel, influenced and manipulated by that regime? Is it not true that Israel, by manufacturing an Iranian threat, seeks to divert global attention away from its crimes toward the Palestinians? Is it not evident that Israel now aims to fight Iran to the last American soldier and the last American taxpayer dollar—shifting the burden of its delusions onto Iran, the region, and the United States itself in pursuit of illegitimate interests?

Is “America First” truly among the priorities of the U.S. government today?

I invite you to look beyond the machinery of misinformation—an integral part of this aggression—and instead speak with those who have visited Iran. Observe the many accomplished Iranian immigrants—educated in Iran—who now teach and conduct research at the world’s most prestigious universities, or contribute to the most advanced technology firms in the West. Do these realities align with the distortions you are being told about Iran and its people?

Today, the world stands at crossroads. Continuing along the path of confrontation is more costly and futile than ever before. The choice between confrontation and engagement is both real and consequential; its outcome will shape the future for generations to come. A second amphibious ready group carrying Marines is also inbound. The USS Boxer and its supporting ships left San Diego on March 18, carrying roughly 2,500 Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit. A short time ago, the United States military began major combat operations in Iran. Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime. The regime’s proxies have continued to launch countless attacks against American forces stationed in the Middle East in recent years, as well as U.S. naval and commercial vessels and international shipping lines. It’s been mass terror, and we’re not going to put up with it any longer.

From Lebanon to Yemen and Syria to Iraq, the regime has armed, trained and funded terrorist militias that have soaked the earth with blood and guts. And it was Iran’s proxy, Hamas, that launched the monstrous Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, slaughtering more than 1,000 innocent people, including 46 Americans, while taking 12 of our citizens hostage. It was brutal, something like the world has never seen before.

Iran is the world’s number one state sponsor of terror, and just recently killed tens of thousands of its own citizens on the street as they protested. It has always been the policy of the United States, in particular my administration, that this terrorist regime can never have a nuclear weapon. I’ll say it again, they can never have a nuclear weapon. That is why in Operation Midnight Hammer last June, we obliterated the regime’s nuclear program at Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan. After that attack, we warned them never to resume their malicious pursuit of nuclear weapons, and we sought repeatedly to make a deal. We tried. They wanted to do it. They didn’t want to do it. Again they wanted to do it. They didn’t want to do it. They didn’t know what was happening. They just wanted to practice evil. But Iran refused, just as it has for decades and decades.

They’ve rejected every opportunity to renounce their nuclear ambitions, and we can’t take it anymore. Instead, they attempted to rebuild their nuclear program and to continue developing the long range missiles that can now threaten our very good friends and allies in Europe, our troops stationed overseas, and could soon reach the American homeland. Just imagine how emboldened this regime would be if they ever had, and actually were armed with nuclear weapons as a means to deliver their message.

For these reasons, the United States military is undertaking a massive and ongoing operation to prevent this very wicked, radical dictatorship from threatening America and our core national security interests. We’re going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground. It will be totally again obliterated. We’re going to annihilate their navy. We’re going to ensure that the region’s terrorist proxies can no longer destabilize the region or the world and attack our forces, and no longer use their IEDs, or roadside bombs as they are sometimes called, to so gravely wound and kill thousands and thousands of people, including many Americans. And we will ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon. It’s a very simple message. They will never have a nuclear weapon.

This regime will soon learn that no one should challenge the strength and might of the United States Armed Forces. I built and rebuilt our military in my first administration and there is no military on earth even close to its power, strength or sophistication. My administration is taking every possible step to minimize the risk to U.S. personnel in the region. Even so, and I do not make this statement lightly, the Iranian regime seeks to kill. The lives of courageous American heroes may be lost, and we may have casualties. That often happens in war. But we’re doing this not for now. We’re doing this for the future. And it is a noble mission. We pray for every service member as they selflessly risk their lives to ensure that Americans and our children will never be threatened by a nuclear-armed Iran. We ask God to protect all of our heroes in harm’s way. And we trust that with his help, the men and women of the armed forces will prevail. We have the greatest in the world, and they will prevail.

To the members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, the armed forces and all of the police, I say tonight that you must lay down your weapons and have complete immunity. Or in the alternative, face certain death. So, lay down your arms. You will be treated fairly with total immunity, or you will face certain death. Finally, to the great proud people of Iran, I say tonight that the hour of your freedom is at hand. Stay sheltered. Don’t leave your home. It’s very dangerous outside. Bombs will be dropping everywhere. When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations.

For many years, you have asked for America’s help. But you never got it. No president was willing to do what I am willing to do tonight. Now you have a president who is giving you what you want. So let’s see how you respond. America is backing you with overwhelming strength and devastating force. Now is the time to seize control of your destiny, and to unleash the prosperous and glorious future that is close within your reach. This is the moment for action. Do not let it pass.
