It’s not a new thing to feel manipulated in this algorithmic world we inhabit.

We have heard warnings before.

We are on the brink of an amazing new super intelligence that will make our world a better place. Who is warning us that there may be a problem?

What scares the pants off me right now is that the AI Chiefs, these demigods of algorithmic hell, are now telling us that AI development has to slow down.

As I did with Project 2025, I read the playbook of the Orange Führer and his rodeo of former Fox News faces before they were elected. I did this to get an idea of what was ahead.

You did not need to be Dick Tracy to see that they gave us what they had written down with a cherry on top. Fascism and first-class criminal activity have taken hold in America like algae in a reflecting pool. Maybe the midterms will start the reckoning.

Or it could be a wrecking ball. We have about 7 weeks to see what comes of it. Blue or Red waves, all I know is that country called ‘Merica needs some systemic change if it is to survive.

But let’s get back to the existential threat….

This appeared weeks ago in the New York Times:
Dario Amodei, the chief executive of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, published a 3,800-word open letter on Saturday calling for a slowdown in the development of A.I.

The essay prompted other A.I. leaders, including Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI; Elon Musk, SpaceX’s chief executive; and Demis Hassabis, the chair of Google DeepMind, to speak out in agreement. (NYT 13 September 2026)

This was not weeks ago. It’s hard to keep track of time even with a watch.

This was published in the last couple of days. Give it a read.

For just a moment, I felt the world was coming together and then I realised it was not the world. This was an announcement by Dario and then backed up by his fellow demigods of AI.

I smacked myself in the head and thought, “Why are the people who are building this algorithmic, super-intelligent nightmare ‘warning’ us about their developments”?

Trying to make sense of this, I decided to see if anyone out in the land of writers and journalists was peeking behind the curtain of power. If someone could explain to me why these warnings sounded like a siren, but no one knows what to do when they hear that siren. In short, who do we trust to act on the warnings?

I stumbled upon someone who understands AI a whole bunch better than I do. His name is Hamilton Mann and here is a bit about him:

Hamilton Mann is an AI researcher, award-winning author, technology executive, lecturer at INSEAD and HEC Paris, mentor at the MIT Priscilla King Gray Center, and Executive Chairman and President of the Artificial Integrity Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing AI systems that prioritize integrity over intelligence. Mann also serves as Group Vice President at Thales, a global leader in Defense, Aerospace, and Cyber & Digital, where he co-leads global Digital and AI transformations. It was 1990-something, and it was a cool evening on Reiby Place. I have no recall of what gig I was at inside The Basement, but there must have been a break, and I had gone outside to have a toke.

I was fumbling with a lighter and a joint, and I wasn’t being very discreet. I had just lit up, and I noticed this younger dude manhandling the ATM for his cash. His nose had gone up like an infield fly when he caught a whiff.

We made eye contact and I waved him over. I had recognised him as someone who was attending the same gig. We shared the joint, made pleasant conversation and talked about music and ourselves for a good half hour.

Jason and I ran into each other many times through the years. Wandering King Street, seeing him playing with alone or with someone around town, Dashville, here, there and everywhere. We recalled that joint and visited that same moment here and there also.

There I was in a music venue the other night and my partner messaged me:

“Do you know of a singer/songwriter musician, maybe from Katoombah?”

I did not pause and replied via my thumbs on my pocket computer:

“Yes. Jason Walker? Please don’t tell me that he has died?”

Yes, Jason had left the building. That hit me right in the chest.

I knew he had had health and other troubles, but whenever we spoke or crossed paths we had a wee chat and a catch-up. Not close friends, but 2 people who had met through the 2m’s.

Jason Peter Walker (1969 – c. 4 September 2026) was a New Zealand-Australian country musician and writer.^[1] His third album, Ceiling Sun Letters was nominated for the ARIA Award for Best Country Album at the ARIA Music Awards of 2010.

As a writer Walker has published two biographies, Gram Parsons: God’s Own Singer (2002) and Billy Thorpe’s Time on Earth (2009).

Life and career

Born in New Zealand in 1969,^[2] Jason Walker moved to Sydney, Australia at age 18.^[3] In 1997 he joined Golden Rough on guitar alongside Brian Crouch on piano, David Orwell on vocals and guitar, Helen Meany on bass guitar and vocals, and Martin McDonald on drums.^[3][4] That group had started two years earlier as a covers band, playing Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson and Gram Parsons material.^[4] In 1998 they released their debut album of originals, Twin Firs.^[4]

Walker’s debut studio album, Stranger to Someone, was issued via Laughing Outlaw Records in October 2001.^[5][6] Delusions of Adequacy‘s Geoff Parks compared him with Ryan Adams and opined that Walker was “out there on the edges, pushing harder, moving quicker than Adams, who has now become a mainstream media darling.”^[5] Parks noticed “[Walker’s] maturity and songwriting finesse shine through... But it’s on the cover versions featured here that you can hear [his] soul stretching out... [on] this country-fried, cosmic rock album.”^[5]

As a writer Walker published a biography of Parsons, God’s Own Singer, in 2002.^[7] He had started the project in 1996 and told Bill Beaver and Steve Wilcock of Triste magazine that “it completely dominated my life. Everything I did hinged upon the availability of working computers and printers so I could work on it whenever I wanted. I even started working on it during my day job, which was really taking the piss. I almost got fired.”^[7]

Walker released his second studio album, Ashes & Wine in November 2003, providing lead vocals and lead guitar, with a backing band, the Last Drinks, consisting of Brian Crouch on keyboards, Dave Keys on bass guitar, Andrew Lay on drums and Worth Wagers on rhythm guitar.

His second biography was of Billy Thorpe: Billy Thorpe’s Time on Earth and released in 2009.

His third studio album, Ceiling Sun Letters was released in May 2010. It was nominated for Best Country Album at the ARIA Music Awards of 2010.^[8]

Walker’s fourth studio album, All-Night Ghost Town, was released on 5 August 2016 and included the single “Borrowed Tunes”.^[9]

Walker died in September 2026. In his final Facebook post, dated 20 August 2026, he stated that he was severely injured in a car crash.^[10] His death was formally announced by APRA AMCOS on 8 September.^[11]

There is a time and a place for every story.

Circumstances make this the time for this one. Maybe you or someone you love can learn from this.

Present: Last night, the mother of 2 beautiful young women, a widower, and a friend departed for a place where she would feel no pain. People gathered and put their past and conflicts behind them to send her off with love and care. Jen, fare thee well, and we all send you love as you make this journey. I wish I had been there to hold your hand for a bit.

As I have first-hand knowledge of becoming an ‘orphan’ at 25 years old, my thoughts and care are for the children. Even though I may never be called to assist, I want them to know that I am here to understand their loss. Maybe I can share some thoughts if they ever need them.

Past: Dashville Skyline 2022-This was the first festival a number of us had attended since the pandemic. Dashville has always been my happy place. This was not to be the case this time around.

My brother wanted some molly. I advised him (many weeks before) that if it could be procured, he would have it. This didn’t happen; there was little to go around, and it wasn’t my decision who got the magic, as it was not mine.

Friday night at Dashville saw my brother on the ground, unable to get up due to his neuropathy and alcohol. My friends and I helped him up and looked after him. This was not a new development as my brother had been falling when inebriated for some time now. Granted, it was mixing alcohol and weed with his medication that did not help either.

Meanwhile, Saturday came; my sister-in -law had hurt her back so she split and now Jay was on his own when it came to camping. Dashville is a small festival so he was with us all day but something changed when he heard me say to someone, “Oh, is it time to split up the loaves and fishes?” I wandered off with my other friends and the little bits of magic were distributed.

Sunday morning came and I found Jay sitting in the festival grounds reading. When I approached him and asked how he was he yelled at me, “I am not talking to you!”

His face was turning purple. I asked him over and over again what was wrong. He kept saying his new mantra: “I am not talking to you.”

“Well, not talking is not going to get us anywhere. Is it because you did not get the ‘magic’ last night”?

“Well, we could start there”, he said. He walked away and would not talk.

Could we start there? No, we started nowhere because he refused to enter into a conversation.

As he stepped away, he said, “And yeah, I am not giving you and Nello a ride home!”

Wha? The lack of transport was not the issue. I was still digesting the sentence, “we could start there”.

I was flabbergasted and to this day he has never told me why he reacted the way he did. I sent him an email and he called me a liar. There was not one untruth in any of my words.

I tried to call him several times after the festival, but he told me to fuck off.

Now, the only thing I can think of is that maybe he did not get enough of my brotherly attention and/or he was pissed off about the drugs. I will probably never find out.

Bottom line, he said we were done, and he was happy about it.

For me, I have never stopped loving him and never will.

Present: Tomorrow is the 9^th of September, 2026. This same brother of mine has to have Open Heart Surgery to have 2 valves replaced. I offered to go to Canberra to assist my sister-in-law and to be there for support. This got knocked back because she was concerned that he would find out and be pissed off.

I am concerned that he is 77 years old and very worried that this operation is going to be very rough for him. I had no expectations of seeing him, but I wanted to support the rest of the family. You know that blood thickness thing?

Past: During COVID, my brother visited me in Great Western, a small town amongst the vineyards. He spent a good week with me, and we mostly had a good time. I did get pissed off at him once when he was jokingly going to toss my phone to me and I said, “Please no, please.”

He got closer and closer and threatened to toss it to me. I repeated my plea. He got closer and tossed it and I missed it and it cracked the screen. I went outside to let off some steam.

Later that night we were talking. I was dreaming of making a trip to America to see people that I loved and cared for, family and friends. He said, “Why would you do that?”

“Because if I don’t do it, when will I get a chance to tell these people how I feel?”

We talked some more, and he said something that left me cold.

“You know, we are different when it comes to family. You think blood is thicker than water.”

“Yes, that is my belief and will always be the way I roll”, I said. I fought back some anger and the lump in my throat, not understanding his stance. Still a bit pissed off he threw my phone, but hey, that’s a Busch manoeuvre.

Of course, if you are a linguist, you may know the original meaning of the quote, but this is not what he meant.

Present: That brings us to today. Besides my kids, I have very little family in Australia. There is my brother’s family and mine; that is it.

And I am bleeding real blood, because I wish I could be there to support the people I love.

Being told the patriarch of that family would not want me there is quite sad. His word has to rule what others think and do when I could easily lend some support with love and care. But I should have known that would be the decision. Since the Incident At Dashville, there are no longer family gatherings that I am invited to if he is in attendance.

I have gone through all of our texts and messages before Dashville 2022 and all was fine. Silence will never solve this. Silence never solves much.

Tomorrow, as my brother experiences the joys of Open Heart Surgery, I will commune with nature and pray to spirit for his well-being. I hope the operation is successful and that this will get him back up and around again. Even if we never cross paths again, I wish him the best. Always.

Houston….We Have A Problem….9-9-2026

Surgery has been postponed….due to illness. Pauline, my sister-in-law, came down with something in the last few days.
It appears my brother has it, too. No surgery tonight, no sugar tonight in my coffee.

Guess I knew something when I named the playlist…..weird.
