RIP Glenn Hansard (21 April 1970 – 29 July 2026)

Hearts are breaking all over the world. Very saddened by this.

In the early hours of 29th July 2026, Hansard was involved in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on the R109 road near Rugged Lane at the Strawberry Beds in Chapelizod in Dublin city. He suffered catastrophic injuries and was treated at the scene by medical personnel, but was pronounced dead a short time later. He was 56 years old.

The orange steamroller moved slowly through the dirt. Things were getting flattened. The yellow earth-moving tractor, whatever it was called, graded the outer roadway.

“That’s right, it’s a grader”, he thought to himself. There was not much precision in the movement of that yellow beast. As he watched the town and roads take shape in the dirt, a loud blast from an 18-wheeler’s horn made him jump. Sweat rolled down his back as he toiled over the construction site.

He thought that this must be what the adults meant when they said, “It ain’t the heat, it’s the humidity.” He rolled the ambulance and fire truck into the work zone he had created to add some drama to this boring street corner. Little did he know that, when he was a bit older, this corner would have its share of real drama and ambulances and mortality.

Looking up from his Matchbox collection spread out on the corner of New Hyde Park Road, he waved to the driver of the big supermarket delivery truck. The driver paid him no mind as he blasted his sound waves through the afternoon traffic, on his way to another stop.

“When am I going to grow up?”, he moaned to himself. He so longed to be older so he could drive a truck, be a fireman, or even a spaceman. The space race was all the rage in 1963. John Glenn had circled the Earth 3x in 1962. His imagination ran wild as he pictured himself in that white shiny space suit with the amazing helmet staring back at Earth.

He sighed and went back to his real world of trucks, cars and ambulances as the July afternoon traffic whizzed by. He wondered where everyone was going or coming from and wished he were anywhere but this busy suburban street corner. Thankfully, the stories that he created in this little village of dirt sticks and toys kept him occupied.

Just like any corner anywhere in the world.

But today it was 1963; it was Summer, and off in the distance he could hear the tune that the Mr Softee truck played as it prowled the streets with soft-serve ice cream, Italian ices, and milkshakes of many flavours. But it was too early for Mr Softee to be on his street; it was always later in the evening, so this was just a musical tease for my sweet tooth.

My mother cried
When President Kennedy died
She said it was the communists
But I knew better

Being referred to as ‘the baby’ always got his goat. It was not the words so much as the way babeeee was pronounced. If he had known how to use the sentence “Go fuck yourself!” it would have been a thought. There is no chance he would have said it. Using curse words, as they were called, would result in having your mouth washed out with soap. He was too young, the babeee, to know if this would happen, but the threat existed. There is no way anyone was going to put a bar of soap in his mouth: Ivory, Palmolive, nada.

Dads with briefcases and ties loosened, young woman dressed for work, and the late afternoon parade of adults began marching homeward. Traffic had been building, but he was lost in creating highways. Roads and tunnels that would take him away from this street corner. In the near distance, a fire horn blared three times. This horn alerted the locals that it was 6 PM.

Dinner was soon to be served. The imaginary village and stories were packed up for another day. Dad would be home, and Mom would have his chilled Manhattan ready for him after a hard day at Western Union. His siblings would be there, and there was love and joy around the table. And a bunch of teasing.

Time moved slowly.

He still craved to be older.

Meanwhile, the Yarra flows under the Princes Bridge, the sky is filled with cumulonimbus clouds, and the dude in the Mini Cooper outside my window maniacally beats on his steering wheel.

My eyes come back inside the tram. No one meets my gaze as they sit glued to the rectangle. Conversation is almost non-existent.

When was the last time you sat and wondered? When was the last time you sat alone in a café or a pub or on public transport without holding your supercomputer?

You can turn away from whatever screen you are looking at now because you know where this rant may be going. There are studies, articles, videos every week about what you are about to read…or not. As I type this on a larger screen than the supercomputer rectangle we all carry in our pockets, I know I am creating a piece you will probably access ( I will never know if you read it) on your phone.

First-hand knowledge of the dopamine flush you get from pushing a button is something I have been aware of as an issue in my life since I was a child. Pinball machines, computer games for a while, and then a costly addiction for a bit. Just one more twirl and it will be better than the last one. How many quarters, dollars did I jam into mindless screen fun before the advent of the ever-present rectangle? The programming had begun.

Instagram and Reels were my thing before I removed Insta from my phone. Everything has become gamified. They built the device, they give you the apps (with in-app purchases available!!), and then they steal one of your most valuable commodities.

Time.

They also build isolation, although they tell us we are all connected.

Below is an opinion piece I truly liked and a great idea if you are trying to combat the rectangular habit:

I designated a single spot in my home where I could use it: a stripy armchair in my living room, which I have now anointed the Scrolly Chair.

People have gatherings where phones are checked in, phone-free parties are gaining popularity (I’d like to be invited to ANY party these days!) and some people are reverting to flip phones. Please bring back paper maps and sticking to plans.

We find it frustrating when our kids come around and are on their phones when you want some family time. My partner gets defensive when I am looking to connect without that rectangle around, and I get it. Who wants to be told what to do with their rectangle?

NOMOPHOBIA is real. You can feel it in the air. The relationships we have with the rectangle are so acute. We panic if we leave it behind; we check it incessantly; and we use it to answer questions that we would have had conversations about before. The unknown hardly exists anymore because we always have the answer machine with us.

Coming from a generation who lived without mobile phones and super pro rectangles, I look at those days with fondness. My first cell phone was not a personal decision; I had to have one for work. From there, it was all downhill. Now, of course, most people don’t even make phone calls. I know I have a plethora of messaging apps on my I-rectangle.

I have made some changes, but I do want to make more, and I hope I can be successful.

1-My phone will not come with me when I go for a walk

2-My phone will be charged overnight and not brought into the bedroom.

3-If I am hanging out at home with others, after dinner, the phone will be relegated to some place else. I don’t need non-stop information updates, but I will answer calls, so don’t text!

It’s made me think about my time house-sitting and going bush. I do not do it to get away from my lover or to get away from the place I live. I do it because when I am there, I am in a place where a phone becomes more of a camera. And to be honest, I come alive on the land.

My addiction to the rectangle still requires more attention. I promise not to be like an ex-smoker because I am not an ex-rectangle user; I am just cutting down on my unlocks per day.

“Revolution 9” is a recorded composition that appeared on the Beatles’ 1968 eponymous LP release (popularly known as The White Album). The sound collage, credited to Lennon-McCartney, was created primarily by John Lennon with assistance from George Harrison and Yoko Ono.
